The Rector of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, Alhaji Kehinde Alabi, has urged newly admitted degree students affiliated with the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and those pursuing programs similar to those at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) to familiarize themselves with institutional rules and uphold discipline throughout their academic journey.

Alabi gave the charge on Friday, February 20, 2026, during the maiden matriculation ceremony for degree students of the polytechnic in affiliation with the University of Ilorin.

The ceremony was held at the institution’s Education Trust Fund (ETF) Hall, Addressing the matriculating students, the Rector emphasized the importance of studying the student handbook and other institutional guides, noting that understanding regulations is essential for academic success and responsible conduct.

He urged the students to shun sharp practices and maladaptive behaviours capable of tarnishing their image and bringing disrepute to both institutions.

The Rector declared that the polytechnic maintains zero tolerance for indecent dressing, advising students to strictly comply with the approved dress code as part of their obligation to uphold institutional standards.

He also warned against involvement in cultism, describing it as a destructive vice that has ruined the future of many youths.

“Cultism is a cankerworm; avoid it like a plague. Do not be added to the list of youths whose destinies and futures are being ruined by their involvement in these negative groups,” he warned.

Alabi further appreciated the management of the University of Ilorin for what he described as a worthy partnership with the polytechnic.

He also commended the Executive Governor of Osun State and his team for providing a conducive environment for the affiliation to thrive, as well as staff members who contributed to the success of the programme.

In his remarks, the Director of the Centre for Affiliate Institutions at the University of Ilorin, Prof. Yahaya Imam, assured the students that they are fully recognized as bona fide students of the university.

He emphasized the institution’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community development, urging the newly admitted students to take their admission seriously, especially as many applicants were unable to secure placement.

Prof. Imam stressed that students must maintain at least 75 percent lecture attendance to qualify for examinations, adding that academic dedication remains key to their success.

He explained that affiliate students would enjoy the same academic privileges as their counterparts on the main campus, including access to academic databases and digital learning resources. According to him, login details would be made available through the Rector to ensure seamless access.

The Director also reinforced the importance of discipline and modest dressing, warning that indecent dressing would not be tolerated. He cautioned against examination malpractice, leakages, and the buying or selling of examination questions, stating that any student or lecturer found guilty would face disciplinary action.

He encouraged the students to visit the university’s official website to familiarize themselves with its rules and regulations and disclosed that they would be eligible to apply for support from NELFUND, just like other students of the university.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the affiliation between Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, and the University of Ilorin, as the pioneer set of degree students were formally admitted into the academic community.
