The Government of Osun State has declared Tuesday, June 12, 2018, a public holiday to commemorate the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Gen. Ibrahim Babagida, the then head of state, annulled the election which would have seen chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola emerged as the democratically elected president of what is term "the freest and fairest election in the history of Nigeria".

The Commissioner for Home Affairs in Osun State, Dr. Obawale Adebisi, said in a statement that the public holiday was in line with a policy of the state to observe June 12 as Democracy Day every year.

She added that the work free day is to enable residents and other stakeholders to mark the Democracy Day.
