• BREAKING: OSPOLY SUG Engages Iree Police Division Over Rising Criminal Activities

    By Afeez Ogungbemi

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, has paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Police Divisional Headquarters in Iree following recent criminal incidents involving students within the host community.

The visit was aimed at engaging the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) on possible collaborative efforts between the Union and the police to curb rising criminal activities and enhance the safety of students and residents.

During the visit, the DPO introduced the SUG executives to the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), who has been directly handling reported criminal cases in Iree.

The DCO provided insights into the nature and frequency of recent incidents, with particular emphasis on theft and robbery cases affecting students.

Addressing one of the most frequently reported offences, ladies’ bicycle theft, the DCO advised students who own bicycles to install tracking devices.

According to her, this would aid faster investigation, improve recovery chances, and help in apprehending suspects.

On the reported increase in robbery cases, the police assured the Union that security measures are being intensified across the town, and also cautioned students against placing blind trust in individuals with unrestricted access to their residences, especially regular or “personal” commercial motorcyclists.

She further encouraged residents to install solar-powered CCTV cameras around their homes, noting that such surveillance systems would assist police investigations and serve as a deterrent to criminal activities.

Moreover, students living in areas prone to theft were advised to limit the use of generators at night.

The police explained that reduced generator noise would make it easier for neighbours to detect suspicious movements and alert security operatives promptly.
