NANS Southwest Urges Osun Residents to Shun Violence, Embrace Peace Ahead of Election
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has called on students, youths and residents of Osun State to maintain peace, unity and orderliness before, during and after the forthcoming governorship election.
The appeal was contained in a press release issued by the Office of the Assistant Secretary General (ASG) today, 4th August, 2026, by NANS Southwest Zone D, urging all eligible voters to participate peacefully in the democratic process.
According to the statement, elections should not be seen as a battlefield but as an opportunity for citizens to freely choose their leaders through the ballot.
NANS appealed to students across tertiary institutions in Osun State and other residents not to allow political differences to disrupt the peace and harmony of the state.
The association also condemned electoral violence, political thuggery, ballot snatching, voter intimidation, destruction of public property and other unlawful acts capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
It warned students against allowing themselves to be used by politicians to perpetrate violence for personal political interests.
The student body further urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, respect democratic principles and channel any electoral grievances through lawful and constitutional means.
NANS also called on residents to cooperate with security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant agencies, to ensure the protection of lives, property and the integrity of the electoral process. It equally urged security operatives to remain professional, impartial and committed to safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice, democratic governance and the protection of students' interests, the association stressed that the strength of democracy lies not only in voting but also in preserving peace throughout the electoral process.
The statement concluded by reminding residents that although political parties may differ, the peace, unity and progress of Osun State remain a collective responsibility.
"Vote wisely. Vote peacefully. Vote, don't fight."
