Op-Ed: Why OSPOLY Needs to Eschew Caretaker System and Engage in Election
As the current selected Students Union Caretaker (SUC), nears the end of their term, the Osun state Polytechnic (Ospoly) Iree, is eagerly awaiting the election of the next generation of student leaders. The SUG plays a crucial role in representing the voices and concerns of the student body, organizing events, and advocating for improvements within the institution.
Osun State Polytechnic, a prestigious institution of higher learning where excellence in character and technology is a priority, has been under the care of a caretaker for some time now. However, it is high time for the polytechnic to move away from this arrangement and engage in an election to choose its leadership.
The first and foremost reason for this is the need for democratic participation. By engaging in an election, students will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and choose qualified representatives. This will not only promote a sense of ownership and responsibility but also ensure that the leadership is truly representative of the institution.
Secondly, an election will bring about a sense of transparency and accountability. With a caretaker, decisions are made without much input from the students. However, with an election, the leadership will be answerable to the people and will have to justify their actions and decisions. This will lead to a more open and honest administration, which is essential for the growth and development of the institution.
Moreover, engaging in an election will provide an opportunity for students to learn about the democratic process. It will instill in them the values of active participation, responsibility, and civic duty. These values are not only important for the institution but also for the society at large.
Meanwhile, the Rector of OSPOLY, Mr. Kehinde Alabi has assured the polytechnic community that Students Union election will hold this semester in order to have democratically elected leaders to pilot the affairs of the students internally and externally. In this regards, hopefully, OSPOLY await the fulfilment of this promise as soon as possible.
Nevertheless, Osun State Polytechnic (Ospoly) Iree, needs to shun the caretaker system and engage in an election to choose its leadership. This will promote democratic participation, transparency, accountability, and instill valuable values in the students. It is time for the institution to take a step towards a more democratic and inclusive future.
