The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has formally petitioned the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, over the compulsory payment of a ₦10,000 endowment fund recently imposed on all graduating students of the institution.

In a memo signed by Comrade Abubakar Musefiu D, Director of Research, NANS Southwest (Zone D), today, October 20, 2025, the association described the policy as “exploitative, inconsiderate, and unjustifiable.”

The management, through an internal memorandum issued on October 16, 2025, had directed all ND II and HND II graduating students to pay a sum of ₦10,000 each into a dedicated endowment account as their contribution toward the development of the institution.

However, NANS, in its petition, faulted the decision, noting that the payment was introduced without prior consultation or agreement with student bodies, departmental associations, or key stakeholders. The student body argued that such a levy contradicts the principle of participatory governance and adds to the existing financial burdens already faced by students.

According to the statement, “Graduating students will not directly benefit from whatever amenities or projects the fund might be used for. Imposing such payment amounts to economic exploitation under the guise of development.”

The association further demanded the immediate suspension of the policy and called for the establishment of a joint review committee comprising representatives from the management, Students’ Union Government (SUG), NANS, and other relevant stakeholders to reassess the fairness and transparency of the endowment initiative.

NANS also requested that a detailed financial report of all existing developmental levies be made public to rebuild trust and ensure accountability in the institution’s financial policies.

While reaffirming its commitment to peaceful dialogue, the association warned that failure to address these demands within a reasonable timeframe may compel students to adopt peaceful democratic measures to express their collective disapproval.
