Op-Ed: Now That The Union Is Back

Congratulations, Azeez Tajudeen, alias Honourable, it is a worthy feat to fight and get to this point of jubilation.

Truly it was not an easy task and if anyone think it is easy, they can ask Bengee and DammyGold; the duo will explain how they spent time, energy and money all to see either of them rent the SUB for a year.

They will tell you how sadly enough, everything went to the courtyard of PEC which would be headed by a smiling general that is nothing but an echo chamber of her lord.

Nevertheless, Honourable now that your era heralds the rejuvenation of the Union, there are things you need to know and if you think this missive is personally a letter to you, yes, it is.

First, you should know the union is a simulacrum of students' collective VOICE, any moment you stand to work against the interest of the students, you've betrayed the credo of the union.

Second, you should know, OSPOLITES are faced with millions of troubles from their respective departments to faculties and even in the hands of security guards, non-teaching staff and even, non-students, it is your job now to stand for them. Failure to do so might earn you a failed administration.

And in case you don't know some of the problems, let me keep you abreast; in some departments, final year students are asked not to do projects but pay a sum of money to their project supervisors. That covers project writing and printing. In collecting their respective Certificates, students are asked to pay #100 naira lamination fees, yet their Certificate will never be laminated for them. They will have to do it by themselves, outside with their own money, again.

Two sessions now have had their money paid for project binding to library and until today no project were bounded and money were returned. Such may repeat itself, you need to watch out.

The union is needed here and there, Honourable, you're needed here.

Most times, students are asked to pay for the negligence of some staff members like in the case of final year students who are constantly given issues, mostly created from the negligence of staff, especially by the haughty staffers in screening and faculties office.

Tax clearance especially is another issue you need to work on. Though it seems very impossible to eradicate the issue of tax clearance, it is very possible to plead with the management to allow students to use guardians instead of necessarily subjecting them to do the tax clearance.

There are other issues affecting the morality of OSPOLITES; reading cultures and immorality have championed most of their activities, you need to as well, as the first student of the institution be the ambassador of morality, and preach it to them.

Don't be like some of the past Union leaders that promote immorality through their unruly drinking habits and gratuitous dressings.

I want you to know being voted into the office is not for rest but to work. And I know, believe me, you'll feel tired, during the process, you'll be alone many times, your loyal Comrades will betray you and your heart, mind and soul will experience violent fisticuffs; during this journey, you might even though feel to jet away, but don't. You just need to remember, it is a crown of unrest and you've put it on, unease lies in the head that wears it. Don't be pushed, do everything as it is lawful, ethical and right in your will. But when you're in doubt, always remember to castle, honourably.
