Dr. Akinrosoye Urges Student Leaders to Build Institutions Through Integrity, Accountability

The Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Dr. Akinrosoye Abiodun Idowu, has charged student leaders to uphold integrity, accountability, and responsible representation to build lasting institutions.
He gave the charge on Thursday, July 23, 2026, while delivering a keynote address titled "Understanding the Legislative Arm" at the OSPOLY Students' Union Government (SUG) Legislative Summit 1.0, held at the ETF Building.
Speaking before the Rector, principal officers, staff members, SUG executives, student legislators, and other stakeholders, Dr. Akinrosoye described the legislative arm as the foundation of every strong institution, stressing that effective legislation goes beyond making laws to ensuring accountability, representation, and responsible governance.
Using the analogy of constructing a building, he explained that institutions are built one step at a time through honest debates, accountability, and decisions made in the interest of the people. He warned that institutions founded on weak principles would eventually collapse, just as poorly constructed buildings fail over time.
The Dean urged student legislators to see representation as carrying the voices of students rather than pursuing personal recognition. According to him, true representatives must listen to students' concerns, communicate effectively, and seek solutions to challenges affecting the campus community.
He identified the three major responsibilities of the legislative arm as representation, law-making, and oversight, noting that these functions are essential for promoting transparency, protecting students' interests, and ensuring that the executive arm remains accountable.
Dr. Akinrosoye also cautioned student leaders against allowing emotions, personal interests, or the desire for popularity to influence their decisions. He encouraged them to embrace constructive criticism, engage in meaningful dialogue, and make decisions that would positively impact future generations.
He further advised members of the Student Representative Council to build a legacy based on honesty, wisdom, humility, and service, rather than seeking titles or short-term recognition.
While concluding his address, Dr. Akinrosoye urged student leaders to become "brick layers of honesty, responsibility and vision," emphasizing that institutions endure when leaders build on strong values and remain committed to serving the people.
The Legislative Summit was organised by the OSPOLY Students' Representative Council (SRC) to educate student legislators and strengthen their understanding of legislative responsibilities in student governance.
