‎The Mass Communication Alumni of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (MAOS), officially launched its Multi-Million Naira National Secretariat and Legacy Hub Project on Saturday, with stakeholders calling for stronger alumni engagement, mentorship, and professional responsibility in advancing institutional and national development.

‎The fundraising ceremony, held at City Dwellers Hall, Osogbo, attracted alumni, management of Osun State Polytechnic, media practitioners, students, and other stakeholders from within and outside the state.

‎In his address, the National President of MAOS, Comrade Adekunle Sikiru (Abacus), described the initiative as a landmark step in the association’s growth, noting that the proposed Secretariat and Legacy Hub would serve as a permanent administrative headquarters and a symbol of the association’s enduring legacy.

‎He highlighted the association’s contributions to the institution over the years, including donations of generators and inverter systems, provision of classroom furniture, and support for the development of the Department of Photography Technology. He said the interventions, worth several millions of naira, reflect MAOS’s commitment to institutional development.

‎Adekunle, however, stressed that the success of the Legacy Hub project depends on collective responsibility, urging alumni, corporate organisations, and other stakeholders to contribute toward its realization.

‎Delivering the lecture titled “Communication Professionals as Catalysts for Institutional Excellence and National Development,” the Head of Department, Dr. Idowu Akinrosoye, said communication professionals play a strategic role in shaping institutional credibility and societal progress.

‎He explained that the profession has evolved beyond reporting events to influencing public opinion, promoting development communication, and strengthening democratic and institutional values. He urged alumni to remain committed to ethical practice, mentorship, and sustained support for the department.

‎“Communication professionals are not merely reporters of events or senders of messages; they are catalysts for institutional excellence and national development,” he said.

‎The Rector of Osun State Polytechnic, Mr. Kehinde Alabi, commended MAOS for its consistent support and described the Legacy Hub initiative as a forward-thinking project that would strengthen alumni-institution relations.

‎He encouraged graduates to maintain regular engagement with the department through mentorship and interaction with students, noting that such exposure would broaden students’ understanding of career opportunities in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, advertising, and strategic communication.

‎Also speaking, Dr. Olutope Abiola, Dean of Students’ Affairs, urged alumni in the media industry to project the institution positively through their professional practices and serve as ambassadors of Osun State Polytechnic. He also commended the introduction of the Computer-Based Examination (CBE) system, describing it as a significant step in modernising academic assessment within the institution.

‎A representative of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation emphasised the importance of mentorship, urging experienced professionals to guide and support students, particularly final-year undergraduates, as they prepare for entry into the communication industry.

‎Goodwill messages from alumni and stakeholders described the Legacy Hub project as a strategic initiative that would strengthen MAOS's structure, deepen mentorship culture, and preserve its legacy for future generations. Established in 2011, MAOS has grown into a global alumni network with over 10,000 members across chapters in Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates.

‎The proposed Legacy Hub is expected to serve as a permanent administrative headquarters while enhancing alumni coordination, mentorship, professional development, and collaboration with the institution.
