"Communication Professionals Must Drive Institutional Excellence, National Development" — Dr. Akinrosoye
The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Dr. Idowu Akinrosoye, has called on communication professionals to leverage their expertise in strengthening institutions and contributing meaningfully to national development.
Akinrosoye made the call while delivering a keynote lecture titled “Communication Professionals as Catalysts for Institutional Excellence and National Development” at the Mass Communication Alumni Association (MAOS) Legacy Hub fundraising ceremony held on Saturday in Osogbo.
He said communication professionals have evolved beyond mere reporting of events to becoming strategic thinkers, storytellers, and nation-builders who influence public opinion, build institutional credibility, and drive developmental progress.
According to him, graduates of Mass Communication are equipped with the skills required to function effectively in journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, and digital media, adding that their work plays a critical role in shaping society.
The don emphasised that effective communication remains central to institutional excellence, noting that clear and strategic communication enhances trust, improves teamwork, strengthens morale, and protects institutional reputation, especially during crises.
He urged alumni of the department to uphold professionalism and ethical standards in their practice, while also mentoring younger professionals to sustain excellence in the communication industry.
Akinrosoye further noted that communication professionals have a broader responsibility to national development, stressing their role in promoting peace, combating misinformation, encouraging entrepreneurship, and supporting government and societal development goals. He charged practitioners to use digital platforms responsibly to project truth, unity, and national progress, rather than misinformation and division.
Highlighting challenges in the profession, he acknowledged issues such as misinformation, ethical pressures, and rapid technological changes, but described them as opportunities for growth and professional refinement. Akinrosoye urged communication professionals not to be discouraged by such challenges, but to see them as training grounds that strengthen competence and resilience in the industry.
He concluded by urging alumni to remain committed to excellence, mentor upcoming professionals, and contribute to the growth of the department and the nation at large. The event formed part of activities marking the MAOS Legacy Hub fundraising initiative aimed at strengthening alumni engagement and institutional development.
