• NEB Is Not a Political Wing-It Is a Journalism Body

    ERSTWHILE EIC FORUM

There have been disturbing reports suggesting that the NAMACOS PRO and some members of the executive are attempting to control the NAMACOS Editorial Board (NEB).

Let me state this clearly and responsibly: I do not believe this to be true. It would be unfair to assume that the leadership of NAMACOS intends to undermine the independence of its own journalism body without verified facts.

However, if such actions are happening directly or indirectly then they must be addressed firmly and constitutionally.

The NAMACOS Editorial Board (NEB) was not created to serve politics. It was created to serve as a source of information, truth, and the campus community.

NEB is not a political organisation. It is a journalism body. Its duty is to report events, tell stories, hold leadership accountable, and give students a voice. Once journalism begins to operate like a political office, it loses its credibility and the trust of the people it is meant to serve.

History has taught us this lesson repeatedly: whenever the media becomes too close to political power, it ceases to speak freely. It begins to protect interests instead of protecting the truth. And when that happens, the public stops believing it.

The NAMACOS constitution itself provides clarity on roles:

The PRO serves as Chairman of the Editorial Committee, an administrative and supervisory role.

The Editor-in-Chief presides over editorial meetings.

The Editor-in-Chief determines the composition of the editorial crew.

The Board is responsible for publications and campus reporting.

This structure is intentional. It separates governance from editorial operations. Chairmanship does not equal newsroom control. Administrative oversight does not mean political interference.

The Editor-in-Chief leads the editorial team because journalism requires independence. News judgment, story selection, and publication decisions must remain professional, not political.

NEB must remain a platform for responsible journalism, not propaganda. Its strength lies in its independence, fairness, and commitment to facts.

If the rumours are false, this clarification strengthens public confidence in the leadership of NAMACOS. If they are true, then the constitution must guide correction — not power, not pressure, not influence.

For NAMACOS to grow and earn respect, its Editorial Board must be protected from political influence. Leadership is not about control; it is about respecting roles and allowing institutions to function as they were designed to.

NEB is a journalism body. It should be treated as one.
