The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, has expressed deep sympathy for students affected by a fire that broke out at a private hostel in Iree last night.

According to the union, on the 20th February 2026,  the blaze caused significant damage to the building, as well as to the personal belongings of its occupants.

The union commended the firefighters for their swift response, which prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring hostels and potentially causing a wider disaster.

The union stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Iree Police Station visited the scene to assess the situation and maintain order.

The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), JJC Osun State, was also present to show solidarity and offer support to the victims.

Speaking on behalf of the union, the SUG President, Comrade Ajayi Kehinde  expressed sympathy for those affected, acknowledging both the emotional trauma and material losses suffered.

He assured students that the union stands fully with the victims and will represent their concerns before school authorities.

Furthermore, the union pledged to collaborate with management and relevant stakeholders to assist students in recovering lost academic documents, ensuring academic continuity, and implementing improved safety measures in hostels to prevent similar incidents in the future.
