The management of Osun State Polytechnic Iree on Wednesday held its convocation lecture as part of ongoing activities for the institution’s combined 8th convocation ceremony, which began earlier in the week.

The lecture, held at the Educational Trust Fund (ETF) Hall, focused on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in entrepreneurship and national development, setting the tone ahead of the grand finale scheduled for Thursday.

In his opening remarks, the Rector, Kehinde Adeyemi Alabi, urged students to look beyond graduation and focus on acquiring practical and digital skills. He noted that the institution is moving towards integrating AI into its academic programmes to better prepare students for the modern workforce.

Delivering the lecture, Yakib Ayodele Afolabi of the Department of Business Administration, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, explained that AI is not a threat but a tool that can enhance productivity, innovation, and wealth creation.

He stated that with basic tools such as laptop and internet access, students can develop digital solutions, build platforms, and create value-driven businesses, urging them to acquire relevant digital skills and focus on solving real-life problems.

Speaking with NEB, a lecturer in the General Studies department, Dr. Sanusi, described AI as a tool that enhances innovation across different fields. According to him, AI provides clearer insight, broadens knowledge beyond traditional learning, and will soon become a structured part of academic study in line with the Rector’s plan.

He added that there is a need for students to understand the fundamentals of AI, noting that it does not reduce students’ reading ability but rather expands their thinking through exposure to more information and problem-solving approaches.

Dr. Sanusi also dismissed concerns that AI couldn't replace academic staff, stating that it remains a support system rather than a substitute for teaching. He further affirmed the Rector’s announcement that the institution is set to adopt a yearly convocation system, expressing confidence in its implementation.

As part of the programme, a synopsis of the lecture was presented by the Chairman of the occasion, Taiwo Olufemi Asaolu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilesa.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Rector, Alabi Kehinde Adeyemi Deputy Rector, Registrar, Bursar, Deans, Directors, and other members of staff of the institution.
