OSPOLY SUG Holds First Legislative Summit, Experts Advocate Accountability, Stronger Legislative Culture

The Students' Union Government (SUG) Senate of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, organised its first Legislative Summit 1.0  to educate student leaders on the role of the legislative arm in promoting good governance, accountability, and institutional development.

The summit, held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, themed "Understanding the Legislative Arm," at the Education Trust Fund (ETF) Hall, brought together students of the institution, student leaders, alumni, government representatives, and stakeholders to discuss effective legislative leadership within the Students' Union Government.

In the welcoming address, the President of the Senate, Senator Comrade Ogunsakin Samuel T., said the summit was organised to deepen participants' understanding of the legislative arm and strengthen democratic values within the Students' Union Government.

He noted that a functional legislature is essential to accountability, transparency and quality representation.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Akinrosoye Abiodun Idowu described the legislative arm as the foundation of every enduring institution. Using the analogy of constructing a building, he explained that institutions survive when they are built on integrity, accountability and responsible decision-making.

He stated that every law, honest debate and decision made in the interest of the people serves as a building block for sustainable institutions, warning that weak legislative practices eventually weaken governance.

The communication scholar stressed that the legislature exists to provide checks and balances, ensure oversight of the executive and represent the interests of the people rather than pursue popularity.

According to him, leadership requires character, integrity, wisdom and effective communication, urging student legislators to listen to those they represent, engage in constructive debates and place public interest above personal ambition.

Dr. Akinrosoye further advised student leaders to avoid making decisions based on emotions, but rather on facts, consultation and due process. He encouraged them to build a legacy of service that future generations would appreciate, adding that strong institutions are built through honesty, accountability and cooperation among all arms of government.

He also reminded participants that while executive and legislative arms may sometimes disagree, such disagreements should always focus on improving governance and protecting the welfare of students.

The summit featured goodwill messages and interactive sessions from guests, who encouraged student leaders to uphold democratic principles, strengthen legislative oversight and promote responsible leadership in the institution.

Asking random views, the students who participated, described the programme as an educative and timely initiative that exposed them to the responsibilities of the legislative arm and the importance of collaboration in achieving effective student representation.
